Biography

Rohit Gurunath Sharma, affectionately known as the "Hitman," was born on April 30, 1987, in Nagpur, Maharashtra. His journey from the cricket grounds of Mumbai's beaches to becoming one of the most destructive opening batsmen in cricket history is a tale of raw talent meeting extraordinary timing and elegance.

Growing up in a middle-class family, Rohit's early years were spent in the modest neighborhood of Borivali, Mumbai. His uncle, recognizing his nephew's exceptional talent, played a crucial role in nurturing his cricket career. Young Rohit would travel long distances to attend practice sessions at the Bhavsinhji Cricket Club.

Rohit's style is often described as poetry in motion. His languid footwork, his ability to generate incredible power with seemingly minimal effort, and his trademark pull shot have made him a joy to watch. When in form, he makes batting look effortless, as if time slows down for him alone.

His international career began in 2007, but it was his promotion to the opening slot in ODIs in 2013, suggested by then-captain MS Dhoni, that transformed both Rohit and Indian cricket. As an opener, Rohit became a run-machine, scoring three double centuries in ODIs – 209 against Australia in 2013, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 (the highest individual score in ODIs), and 208* against Sri Lanka in 2017.

His IPL career has been equally stellar. Captaining Mumbai Indians, he led the franchise to five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), making him the most successful captain in IPL history. His calm demeanor and strategic acumen in pressure situations have defined MI's winning culture.

In 2021, Rohit was appointed as India's full-time white-ball captain, and later took over the Test captaincy as well. Under his leadership, India has continued to be a dominant force in world cricket. His captaincy style, characterized by clarity of thought and trust in his players, has earned widespread respect.

The Hitman's ability to score big hundreds is unparalleled. His conversion rate from fifty to hundred is among the best, and when he gets going, bowlers across the world know that a massive score is likely. His 264 against Sri Lanka remains one of the most remarkable innings in ODI history.

Off the field, Rohit is known for his work in rhino conservation through his association with WWF India. His calm demeanor belies a fierce competitor who has delivered some of the most memorable knocks in international cricket.
